In A portrait I am looking for the silence in Somebody. Henri Cartier-Bresson
So many people dislike themselves
so thoroughly that they never see any reproduction of themselves that suits. None of us is born with the right face. It’s a tough job being a portrait photographer.
When words become unclear, I shall focus with my photographs. When images become inadequate,
I shall be content with silence.
When Jack London had his portrait made by Arnold Genthe, London started to praise his friend Genthe
"you must have a wonderful camera ... It must be the best camera in the world... " Genthe then made a portrait which has since become a classic picture of Jack London. When the sitting was finished, Genthe could not contain himself:
"I have read your books, Jack, and I think they are important works of art. You must have a wonderful typewriter.”
